“Electrical and computer engineering (ECE) is a much broader major than I ever expected it to be. There are so many different fields that ECE is a part of and so many disciplines within this major.”– Aaron Clarion

ECE major Aaron Clarion is the vice president of A’s for All – A4A – a Rutgers club with a goal of safely modifying and customizing toys for disabled children. His experience with the club has been formative and he has worked hard to ensure that it will continue to expand after he graduates.

Why Rutgers?

Truthfully, a big factor was the in-state tuition. I’ve learned from my years here that the university is more widely known than I expected, and the academic program for the fields I’m interested in is well regarded nationally.

Why ECE?

It’s a much broader major than I ever expected it to be. There are so many different fields that ECE is a part of and so many disciplines within this major. It’s where I found the fields I’m focused on – quantum computing and information theory.

Have you been involved in any research projects?

I do undergraduate research for Dr. Soljanin – who has been a mentor to me – on quantum games and information theory. I’ve learned so much from this research – and it’s inspired me to try to continue this work in grad school eventually.

What about extracurriculars?

I dedicate a lot of my time that isn’t academic or research-related to working on things for the A4A club. I attend most of the meetings we hold for each of the projects we have going as it’s my responsibility as vice president to supervise and oversee them. It’s a lot of work, but there’s always so much more we want to do, and I have very high hopes for all the good things this club will do in the future.

What has surprised you about Rutgers Engineering?

There are a lot more opportunities for students to engage in activities and organizations than I originally thought.

What is your favorite memory?

It was the A4A Car Showcase we did last semester. It was the most rewarding thing to have modified five ride-on toy cars and given them away to five families and to have been able to meet the kids and the families. The event was a great reminder as to why we’ve put all our time and effort into these projects – and it made everything worth it.

What are your post-graduate plans?

I’ll be traveling to Japan for two weeks with a hometown friend and then hope to work in industry for a year or two before applying to graduate school.

Do you have any advice for new students?

Join A4A! It’s an incredible club. Also, the way your college years turn out entirely depends on you. You have the choice to make the most of them by engaging in clubs like A4A, focusing on academics, or finding things to do with your friends. And be sure to take advantage of the people and resources who are here to help you succeed.

What three words best describe your SoE experience?

You’re Not Alone.
